The Lions entered 2026 with major expectations, but their first two games have exposed serious defensive problems. Jared Goff and the offense have done enough to keep Detroit competitive, yet the defense has allowed 71 points through two games. Injuries have made things even harder, with starting safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph still unavailable.
Brad Holmes has now made a move to address the situation. Detroit signed rookie safety Bishop Fitzgerald off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad, adding another option to a depleted secondary. Fitzgerald stands 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds and has been praised for his ball skills, speed, and coverage instincts.
The rookie also brings impressive production from his final college season at USC. Fitzgerald recorded five interceptions in 2025, showing the playmaking ability that likely caught Detroit's attention.
The Lions need that ability right now. Branch and Joseph cannot return immediately, while Avonte Maddox is also headed to injured reserve after suffering a season-ending foot injury against Buffalo.
Fitzgerald may not solve everything, but he gives Detroit another young player to evaluate while the defense searches for stability. For Holmes, this is another indication that waiting for injured players is not enough.
Lions Continue Exploring Joey Porter Jr. and Veteran DB Options
Fitzgerald is not the only defensive move Detroit has made. The Lions previously worked out veteran defensive backs Jordan Fuller and Jalen Mills, while Detroit has also shown interest in Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Mills has since signed with Detroit's practice squad, giving the Lions a familiar veteran who spent part of last season with the team. Fuller offers starting experience, while Porter would represent a much bigger potential acquisition.
For now, Holmes appears determined to find answers. Fitzgerald is simply the latest piece in Detroit's ongoing attempt to rebuild a struggling secondary.
