Lions Look to Address Defensive Concerns Following Early Season Struggles

Icon Sportswire

The Lions entered the 2026 season with a roster that looked capable of competing at the highest level. However, their first two games have exposed some concerning issues, particularly on defense. While the offense has done enough to keep Detroit competitive, the defense has struggled to consistently stop opponents or create game-changing plays.

That has put the spotlight on Brad Holmes and the Lions' front office. Detroit cannot afford to simply hope its current group figures everything out while the season moves forward. The team has already started exploring ways to add experience and depth to Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard's unit.

According to reports, the Lions are working out veteran defensive backs Jordan Fuller and Jalen Mills. Neither player represents the kind of superstar addition that would immediately transform the defense. However, both veterans could give Detroit additional options as the coaching staff searches for answers.

That could become especially important as the Lions try to stabilize a secondary that has struggled to consistently make plays. Sometimes, a midseason addition does not need to become a star. It simply needs to provide reliable snaps and give coaches another option.

Lions Continue Exploring Move For Joey Porter Jr.

Detroit has also previously explored the possibility of adding Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Porter has reportedly been unhappy with Pittsburgh's approach to contract extensions, while the Steelers have remained open to considering their options.

The Lions' interest makes sense given their defensive concerns. Detroit also created roughly $35.7 million in cap space by restructuring Penei Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown's contracts, giving Holmes additional flexibility.

However, acquiring Porter would require significantly more than simply bringing in a veteran for a workout. Fuller and Mills represent immediate depth options, while Porter would potentially become a much bigger addition.

For now, Detroit appears willing to explore every avenue. The Lions know their defense needs answers, and Holmes is clearly looking for them.
