Lions Fans Get Uplifting News as Dan Campbell Provides Injury Update

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell answers a question before OTAs at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Friday, May 29, 2026.
The Lions' defensive struggles have become difficult to ignore early in the 2026 season. Detroit has missed two of its most important defensive backs, Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, and their absence has hurt a unit searching for consistency. The Lions have struggled to stop opponents and create the plays needed to change games.
That makes the potential return of Branch and Joseph particularly important. Many around Detroit believe the defense could look different once both starters return, giving Dan Campbell and Kelvin Sheppard more of their preferred personnel. Campbell was recently asked about their recoveries, although he stopped short of offering a firm timeline.
Still, Campbell provided some encouraging news. He suggested both players are progressing through rehab, with Branch currently closer to returning than Joseph.
“I think Branch has a chance to be back sooner than Kerby, but it won't be this week.”
While Campbell remains cautious, the update suggests progress for both defensive backs. He also explained that Detroit has not been able to do everything it needed to do with Joseph recently, which has contributed to his longer recovery. For now, the priority remains strengthening Joseph's knee and making sure he feels comfortable before sending him back onto the field.
That patience could prove important for Detroit. The Lions need both players healthy rather than rushing either one back. Branch appears closer to returning, while Joseph's rehab will require more time.
Lions Explore Joey Porter Jr. and Veteran DB Options
Detroit's front office is also exploring ways to strengthen the secondary. The Lions have previously inquired about Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., while recently working out veteran defensive backs Jordan Fuller and Jalen Mills.
Neither veteran represents a superstar addition, but both could give Campbell and Sheppard additional options. Porter, meanwhile, remains a potentially bigger move if Detroit can work out a deal with Pittsburgh.
For now, Detroit is exploring every avenue while waiting for its injured starters to return.
