Detroit Lions fans are growing frustrated with general manager Brad Holmes as defensive injuries expose the team's lack of depth. Supporters are desperate for reinforcements, but Holmes has yet to make a significant move to strengthen the unit.
Detroit's closest shot at adding help was a potential trade for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. However, Holmes reportedly refused to surrender a second-round pick, and the deal fell through. Porter has since joined the Dallas Cowboys, leaving Detroit searching for alternatives.
The failed pursuit has left many fans enraged, with supporters questioning why Holmes has not been more aggressive. However, one Lions fan recently defended his decision, arguing that desperation should not dictate the team's spending.
“I know that everybody likes the idea right and we're desperate. There's a premium when you're desperate. Like Lions fans are desperate. I understand that. I get off the highway before the second-round pick, fourth-round pick plus $80 million extension...I'm definitely not good for a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and 14 games of, yes, the most-penalized defensive player in the NFL since 2023.”
The fan's argument is straightforward: Detroit needs defensive help, but not at any cost. Surrendering two picks and committing $80 million to Porter could have been an expensive gamble. With Porter now in Dallas, however, Holmes must find another way forward.
Brad Holmes Will Have to Address Detroit's Defensive Problems
Walking away from Porter does not solve Detroit's defensive struggles. Injuries have created major concerns across the secondary, testing the team's depth at a crucial point in the season.
Holmes may have avoided overpaying, but the Lions still need reinforcements. They cannot simply rely on injured players returning while their defensive problems persist.
Whether through another trade or available talent, Holmes must explore alternatives. With injuries piling up and fans growing impatient, the pressure to strengthen Detroit's defense will only increase.
