Lions Fans Get Worrying Joey Porter Jr. Trade Update Amid Defensive Concerns

Imagn

The Detroit Lions have been linked with Joey Porter Jr. for quite some time, and their interest makes sense. Detroit’s secondary has been hit hard by injuries, leaving Dan Campbell with serious concerns on defense. Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph remain sidelined, while Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper have also suffered injuries.

Porter, meanwhile, has become a legitimate trade candidate in Pittsburgh. The cornerback has not played this season while dealing with a back injury and contract uncertainty entering the final year of his rookie deal. Reports indicate Porter is open to a trade, with Pittsburgh willing to listen to offers.

That has naturally put Detroit on the list of teams to watch. The Lions have reportedly contacted Pittsburgh about Porter, showing their interest is more than simple speculation. However, there is now a problem for Campbell and Brad Holmes, with reports identifying the New York Giants as another serious potential destination.

That could leave Detroit searching elsewhere, but the need remains obvious. The Lions cannot afford to ignore their secondary while key defenders remain unavailable. Adding an experienced corner like Porter would give Campbell another proven option when his defense needs one most.

Joey Porter Jr. Would Be a Huge Upgrade for Detroit

Porter has started 41 of his 47 career games since entering the NFL in 2023. He has recorded 165 tackles, 31 passes defended and three interceptions during that span. His 2025 season included 51 tackles, 14 passes defended and one interception.

His 2026 statistics remain empty because he has yet to appear this season. Still, his previous production and physical 6-foot-2 frame explain why teams remain interested.

For Detroit, Porter would bring size, experience and physicality to a cornerback room that needs help. He could immediately give the Lions another starting-caliber option on the outside. If New York gets there first, however, Detroit will need another answer to its defensive concerns.
