The Lions needed a statement after their disappointing loss to Buffalo, and Jahmyr Gibbs delivered exactly that against the Jets. Detroit escaped with a 31-24 victory, but Gibbs was undoubtedly the biggest star on the field. He finished with 164 total scrimmage yards and three touchdowns, giving the Lions' offense a spark whenever it needed one.
Gibbs rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries while adding seven receptions for 65 yards. His second rushing touchdown was particularly spectacular, as he reversed direction and accelerated away from multiple Jets defenders. He then added his third touchdown through the air late in the fourth quarter, putting Detroit ahead for good.
Naturally, Gibbs' performance sparked more conversations about his growing legacy in Detroit. With Barry Sanders watching from the stands during Homecoming Weekend, the comparisons became even harder to avoid. Dan Campbell was subsequently asked whether he sees similarities between Gibbs and the Lions legend.
“He's got things in his body that certainly reminds you of Barry. His change of direction, his acceleration, speed, the power, the body control. He's different.”
Campbell's praise did not stop there. He believes Gibbs still has plenty of untapped potential, making the comparison even more intriguing as the young running back continues developing.
Jahmyr Gibbs Still Has Barry Sanders in Mind
Gibbs has already spoken about how Sanders' presence motivates him. He previously admitted that whenever the Lions legend is around, he feels the need to raise his game and prove himself.
That feeling certainly appeared to carry over into Sunday's performance. Gibbs even moved past Billy Sims into second place on Detroit's all-time rushing touchdown list, with only Sanders ahead of him.
For Gibbs, being mentioned alongside Sanders remains humbling. For Campbell, however, the comparison comes with an even bigger belief: Detroit may not have seen the best of Gibbs yet.
