The Lions have endured plenty of questions during their uneven start to 2026. Detroit lost to Buffalo in Week 2, while injuries and defensive struggles created even more concern. Through it all, Jahmyr Gibbs has remained one of the team's most reliable weapons.
Gibbs entered Week 3 with 208 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and 91 receiving yards. He also had one receiving touchdown, giving him a major role in an offense that needed consistency.
Against the Jets, Gibbs delivered again. Detroit leaned on him throughout a tense 31-24 victory, and he finished with 99 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He added seven catches for 65 yards, including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:25 remaining.
His performance became even more special because Barry Sanders was watching from the stands during Detroit's Homecoming Weekend. Gibbs has spoken openly about looking up to Sanders, and having the Lions legend in the building appeared to bring out something extra.
“Every time he's here, I've got to step up my game a little bit. So to be in the same conversations as him is just humbling. Somebody I've looked up to for a long time.”
Sanders being there was no coincidence. Gibbs knew one of Detroit's greatest players was watching, and he responded with a performance worthy of the occasion. He now has 307 rushing yards, 156 receiving yards, and five touchdowns through three games.
Lions personnel were ecstatic over Jahmyr Gibbs' Week 3 performance
Jahmyr Gibbs' performance had the Lions buzzing after the game. Jared Goff praised his explosiveness, while Dan Campbell said Gibbs “hit another gear” once Detroit got him going in the second half.
TeSlaa was also clearly part of the celebration surrounding Gibbs. The rookie helped set up the winning touchdown with a huge catch before Gibbs finished the drive, giving the Lions another reason to appreciate their star running back.
The reaction reflected just how important Gibbs has become to Detroit. After another game-changing performance, the Lions know they have a player capable of taking over when the game reaches its biggest moments.
