Young Lions OL Tate Ratledge Faces Pressure Entering 2026

There is no more waiting in the wings for the 25-year-old Tate Ratledge. Entering the 2026 season, the training wheels are completely off for the young Detroit Lions offensive lineman.
During the Lions' offseason programs and OTAs, coaches continued examining him at several positions across the offensive line.
The Lions are still seeking the best long-term player in the middle of the line after major roster changes and injuries of last season.
"Ratledge was thrust into a starting role sooner than expected with the surprise retirement of Frank Ragnow. While he had his struggles, he definitely found more consistency as the season went along." as per Sidelion report.
Ratledge was drafted as an offensive guard in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft as a solution to that problem.
Despite early struggles in the past, Ratledge improved late in the year and became one of the more reliable blockers on the roster. His growth was noticeable during the second half of the season.

Ratledge appeared in 17 games in his rookie NFL season, playing over 1.000 offensive snaps, allowing 2 sacks, 9 quarterback hits, and 13 quarterback hurries. He finished his debut year with a 70.2 Pro Football Focus overall grade and ranked among the top guards in the league.
Entering his second year, expectations are higher as the Lions believe Ratledge can become more than just a reliable starter. Analysts and fans have already identified him as a potential breakout player for 2026.
There is pressure for him to perform, but the Lions are counting on him to help them get to the playoffs this season.
Ratledge Reveals Rookie Struggles
Ratledge had a strong rookie campaign, believing he is only scratching the surface of his potential. Every challenging matchup and adjustment during his first NFL season was an important learning experience that he plans to build on heading into 2026.
"(My play) progressed over the year, but obviously, it wasn't where I wanted it to be, not where this unit wanted it to be. So I mean (I) just got to improve on it as a building block."
Ratledge has proved he can compete at a high level, but he remains focused on improving his consistency and overall technique.
His mentality has become one of the biggest reasons the Detroit Lions are optimistic about his future. Rather than being satisfied, Retledge openly acknowledged that his performance still fell short.
That self-awareness with his ability could help him become the cornerstone of Detroit's offensive line moving forward.
