Jahmyr Gibbs has established himself as one of the NFL’s most explosive offensive weapons. Some believe Detroit have waited too long to make him the centerpiece of the offense.

That includes two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy, who suggested the Lions may have cost themselves a legitimate Super Bowl opportunity by limiting Gibbs’ workload during previous seasons.

“The truth is, it’s a little too late. I think with that type of offense, he should have been touching the ball because they might have been in the Super Bowl if he was,” McCoy said on the Speakeasy podcast.

McCoy further argued that Detroit’s coaching staff, led by head coach Dan Campbell, failed to maximize that talent when it mattered most.

“There’s so many times where I watch games where he’s not getting the ball, he’s on the sideline. I love Montgomery because he’s a hell of a running back, but they are different. The time you use a running back is when they’re young,” McCoy added.

The former All-Pro running back specifically pointed to Detroit’s near Super Bowl run during Gibbs’ rookie season. He believes a larger role for Gibbs could have changed the outcome for the Lions, as they suffered a loss to the 49ers in the NFC championship game.

“You’re saving him for what? You’re about to pay him all this money, get your use. He’s that good, needs to touch the ball twenty-some times a game. That should be the minimum,” McCoy explained.

While McCoy questioned how Detroit has used Gibbs so far, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes the Lions star is about to have a historic season.

Gibbs Touted To Be The Best Running Back Next Season

Acho predicted that Gibbs will be regarded as the best in the NFL by the end of the season.

“I think whether accurate or inaccurate, the conversations at the end of the season will be Jahmyr Gibbs is the best running back in football,” Acho said. “He’s good enough to be in that conversation.”

He also added a bold prediction for Gibbs’ 2026 campaign while also suggesting that statistically, he would be better than most.

“I think Jahmyr Gibbs will have 2,400 all-purpose yards this year. And I think he’ll probably have 20 plus touchdowns this year,” Acho said. “I think he will be head and shoulders better than everybody not named Bijan Robinson from a statistical standpoint.”
