The Detroit Lions’ leadership is reportedly on uneven grounds, with rumors of disagreements between GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell after finishing at the bottom of the division in 2025.

“Lions could be facing some internal conflict amid free agency,” according to Candace Pedraza of SideLion Report.

This is the first offseason where the roster changes appear to have created tension between Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. John Maakaron from Sports Illustrated has outlined three possible reasons behind it.

The first reason involves a decade-long relationship with a player who had been with the franchise since being drafted in the first round of the 2016 draft. In March, Taylor Decker posted on Instagram, conveying how he felt.

“I fully intended to do it once again, but my time as a Lion is coming to an end," the message read. "In the weeks since notifying the team of my return there have been numerous discussions. Many of which were a surprise to me, and we could not find common ground. Therefore I decided to request my release.”

Given that Decker played over 9,000 snaps, a pay cut surprised many, including two ex-Lions players. Brad Holmes offering a reduction might not have been what head coach Campbell expected, but that's not the only possible reason for the tension.

While incentive-heavy contracts have been a common sight with Brad Holmes at the helm, Dan Campbell may not agree with that strategy for all players. At a time when the Lions need a strong tackle, the 8-time Pro Bowler, Cameron Jordan, remains unsigned, with offers piling up.

At present, both Campbell and Holmes only have 2 years left on their contract, and as the Lions' defense will likely determine the team’s success this season, Campbell might be unhappy about a failure to sign the high-impact players. 

The difference between Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes' approach to the 2026 NFL season

On various occasions, Dan Campbell has talked about the 2025 season, and he hasn’t gone easy on himself. When asked about his performance by ESPN, he was blunt.

“Not good enough. We didn't get in," he said. "We underachieved. So, not good. I'd give myself a freaking F.”

Clearly, Campbell is determined to grow and hire young, gritty athletes for the Lions to win, but Brad Holmes' plan thus far reads a little different.

While most contenders chase big names, Brad Holmes has doubled down on prove-it deals. From bets on an injury-prone Payton Turner to bounce-back bets on Isiah Pacheco, who hasn't had a 20-yard carry in a while, Detroit’s plan is clear: bet on hunger, not hype.

In a media session at the NFL owners' meetings, Holmes mentioned the balance he's trying to maintain.

"I do think that’s part of the discipline that’s required for where we’re at as a football team right now," the GM said. "That is, yes, the balance of winning now but also wanting to sustain winning as well."

The Lions are walking a fine line between smart spending and ignored opportunity. The gaps still sit in the offensive tackle room, and the interior defensive line needs answers. If Holmes can strike gold in the draft again, this strategy could earn praise in hindsight, but it's still a risk for now.
