An ex-Lions star has called time on his career at 30, closing out an unusual NFL journey that never fully followed the expected path.

Defensive back Andre Chachere has announced his retirement from the NFL. After playing for seven seasons, the Chachere has finally rested his cleats. 

“Every time I’ve been let go and picked up, I’m always thankful,” Chachere said, recalling all his NFL stops. “Whether it’s just a workout, practice squad, finally making a roster, whatever it is, I’m just thankful for the opportunity, and I’ll never take it for granted.”

Andre Chachere was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent out of the 2018 Free Agency out of San Jose State Spartans.

“Started with Houston and went to Detroit and then went to Arizona, then to Carolina and back to Arizona, and then to Indianapolis and then here,” he said via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Crazy.”

He has a long series of releases. First from the Texans, then with the Lions, where he didn't start any games.

Followed by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, and finally the Cardinals. 

According to Pro Football Focus data, in 2024, his PFF grade was 60 with just 3 snaps played. His best season was with the Cardinals, where he appeared in all 17 games with five starts. 

That’s what defined his career. Not lack of effort, but lack of stability. But why this uncertainty throughout his career?

He was an UDFA. Teams like the Texans, Lions, and the Arizona Cardinals have signed him to their practice squad, and later, he was waived. 

His versatility also has a role to play; he has played as a cornerback, nickel, and safety, because of which he remained a backup at multiple spots rather than a starter at one. 

In 2021, during his time with the Eagles, he played as a special teamer and gunner, which again resulted in less game time. 

He played in 16 games, mostly as a special teamer, and started one. 

Multiple times, he has missed the 53-man roster; similarly, he missed his entire 2025 season, resulting in his retirement.
