“They gave up so many deep pass plays” - NFL veteran worried about Lions defense before Josh Allen matchup

The Detroit Lions escaped with a 31-30 overtime win in Week 1. And now, their defensive performance has raised questions ahead of Thursday night's matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Speaking on ESPN's First Take, NFL veteran Jason McCourty highlighted the issues that surfaced for the Lions against New Orleans. Detroit built a 21-0 lead at home before allowing the Saints to erase the deficit and force overtime.

McCourty specifically pointed to the Lions' secondary and the challenges it faces against Josh Allen. The Buffalo Bills star quarterback now gives Detroit an immediate test after its shaky showing against New Orleans:

“I think for them in the secondary on the defensive side of the ball specific, getting a challenge like Josh Allen in Week 2 and being able to perform. They gave up so many deep pass plays where guys just weren't making a play on the football.”

Detroit will need its secondary to respond quickly against Josh Allen and the Bills.

Lions have an opportunity to prove they are back to being themselves

Jason McCourty also believes Thursday's game gives Detroit a chance to build confidence early.

The Lions missed the playoffs last season and entered this year focused on rediscovering their identity. McCourty noted that they only “skimmed by” in Week 1.

“I think to beat a team like the Buffalo Bills and to go up against a quarterback like Josh Allen... You can prove a lot to yourself in Week 2.”

The matchup could give Detroit a chance to build on its Week 1 result and establish momentum early in the season.
