In January, the Lions hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator after moving on from John Morton following a disappointing season. With Detroit now on its fourth offensive coordinator in five years, building chemistry is a priority, but Jared Goff believes that process is already underway.

The Lions' QB recently told NFL Network insiders Steve Wyche and Stacey Dales that while building chemistry with Drew Petzing will come with early growing pains, he's confident things will work out.

“That's what I try to do with him, is just talk with him as much as possible. I know he's doing the same with me,” said Jared Goff. “But making sure we're on the same page and understanding each other is the full success. There will be growing pains early, but up to this point, man, it's been really, really good, and I've had a lot of fun with him.”

Jared Goff told NFL Network's Stacey Dales that Drew Petzing has been a great support to the team. He added that they keep communication open by sharing ideas and staying aligned while developing plays throughout the week.

Petzing joined the Lions after spending three seasons as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator and play-caller. Unlike in Arizona, he'll have more freedom in Detroit thanks to the Lions' elite offensive roster.

He inherits a veteran-led unit, with Jared Goff finishing top three in passing yards (4,564), touchdowns (34), and passer rating (105.5) last season.

Petzing certainly knows this, as he is treating Goff not just as his quarterback, but as an on-field coach who understands the game as well as anyone.

"He's very much like having an extra coach on the staff, just in terms of how much he's seen, the way he thinks about the game, how hard he works at it," Petzing said earlier this offseason while discussing what it's been like working with Goff, per senior writer Tim Twentyman of Detroitlions.com.

Last season, Goff experienced a dip in efficiency, posting a 58.0 Total QBR, his lowest since joining the Lions.

However, there is reason for optimism. According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, a favorable schedule, along with Drew Petzing taking over as offensive coordinator, could help Goff regain his form.

“The Lions' schedule also projects as the sixth easiest in the league, based on the 2025 record of their opponents. If Goff takes to Petzing's offense and coach Dan Campbell doesn't have to take over offensive playcalling again, the Lions could find themselves back at their 2024 heights,” wrote Graziano.

Back in Arizona, Petzing built a productive offense despite inconsistent quarterback play from Kyler Murray and frequent reliance on backup quarterbacks.
