A move meant to reset his value might bring him right back. Taylor Decker’s free agency path could end where it started, in Detroit. 

With Taylor Decker announcing his departure from the Lions on March 9, the veteran tackle remains unsigned, leaving both fans and analysts questioning how the situation has stalled.

Given his experience and track record, Decker was not expected to stay on the market this long.

But two weeks in, the lack of movement raises a bigger question, not just about timing, but about whether the gamble to test free agency is already backfiring.

Taylor Decker requested his release because of the steep pay cut that the Lions were offering to manage their finances for free agency. 

Taylor Decker entered free agency likely aiming for a stronger deal or a better long-term situation, but the market has not responded the way he anticipated.

Either the teams are filled, or they are considering someone else over him for their 2026 roster. The Lions understand his fit, his role in the system, and what he brings to the locker room, which makes a reunion possible if they agree to bury the hatchet. 

Speculations from Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox said that he was eyed by the Cleveland Browns and the Packers. But recently, the Green Bay Packers have landed a deal with Jordan Morgan, and it is believed that the Browns are now moving with someone at No. 6.

According to Spotrac, Taylor Decker landed a rookie deal with the Lions in 2016 for four years at $10 million. Later, he received a rookie extension, followed by another, making it a 3-year, $60 million contract.

Although the Lions took a dead cap hit of $9.5 million to release Taylor Decker, if both parties agree on common ground, they would be a good fit for each other.

Why Taylor Decker and the Lions Still Make the Most Sense Together

With all potential suitors occupied, the Lions could remain in his home. With Taylor’s release, the Lions did sign Larry Borrom for $5 million. But trusting him with the blindside might raise some concerns. 

Whereas a veteran with a 67.9 PFF grade would remain desirable for the spot. Ranked 41st among 89 eligible offensive tackles, and he only gave up two sacks in 551 pass-blocking snaps.

The reunion may sound awkward, but Taylor already understands Detroit’s offensive structure, communication system, and protection schemes.

Both HC Dan Campbell and Taylor Decker know each other well, which will eventually give them an advantage by allowing them to work in a familiar environment. 

It will be feasible for Jared Goff as well if he is playing with players he’s already synchronized with. Taylor Decker may not be a long-term answer anymore, but he is still a stable one and can deliver good tackles to the Lions.
