After requesting his release over a steep pay cut, Taylor Decker remains an unrestricted free agent, a reminder that players don’t always get to choose how their careers play out.

According to Chris of Sports Talk Detroit, the outlook may be more serious than expected, with the possibility that Decker’s run is nearing its end.

“Like it never ends on your own terms,” said Chris on April 5. “It's kind of a messy ending. You're going to get cut. You're going to go try to find another team, and there's not much interest, and then you decide, okay, guess I'm done.”

Some players, like John Elway, walk away on their own terms after 16 seasons with the Denver Broncos.

While others, like Peyton Manning, are forced to step aside as injuries take over. Manning had a 13-year run with the Indianapolis Colts before he suffered the neck injury and had to sit out the 2011 season. Ultimately joined the Broncos for the final four seasons of his career.

And right now, Taylor Decker finds himself somewhere in between those two realities.

In the 2026 NFL free agency, teams are making conservative moves. Decker is among a few star players in the agency who have not landed in a new home. 

Taylor Decker requested his release from the Motown team due to the “steep” pay cut. Even after discussions, both sides never came to a common ground. 

Recently, in an interview with Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network, Decker shared his frustration and mentioned that the Lions management abandoned him after his release. 

It is not like that if Decker does not wish to play. As per his conversation with Rogers, Decker still wants to play for the Lions. But that’s the harsh reality: interest isn’t guaranteed, even for a proven veteran.

Taylor Decker is still an above-average blindside protector, but the market hasn’t moved for him the way many expected.

One of the reasons is his age, at 32, teams start looking at long-term value, not just past production. Then comes the money. His expected cap number is on the higher side.

According to Spotrac, Decker's market value averages $21.32 million per year. That's a huge price the teams would have to pay.

A rich history of injuries is yet another contributing factor. His shoulder started acting up during the 2024 season, which ended in surgery. Due to this, he missed two games in 2025. 

Then there’s also the human side. According to Rogers, Decker has been selective about where he wants to go, ruling out division rivals like the Bears and Packers.
