Taylor Decker's time in Detroit appears to be over. The veteran offensive tackle broke his silence on stalled contract talks with the Lions and the management's 'radio silence.'

During an interview with Justin Rogers of the Detroit Times, offensive tackle (OT) Taylor Decker showed his frustration about not hearing back from the Lions management.

According to Decker, he felt abandoned by the leadership, especially by the GM Brad Holmes. “It’s been radio silence,” Decker told Rogers.

“It’s uncomfortable. It’s awkward. It feels like a high school breakup, where you can’t even make eye contact when passing each other in the hall,” added the OT.

Taylor Decker approached his former skipper and general manager about his potential return for the 2026 NFL season. Upon not hearing back from them, it felt like, “You’re not our guy anymore,” Decker said.

Justin Rogers said, “After giving everything he had to the franchise for a decade, Decker expected more. He wanted to hear from his coach, from the general manager.”

Decker also mentioned that he has spent his whole career playing for the Detroit Lions, even through the injuries. The OT reportedly recalled that the team wanting him to take a pay cut was a surprise.

"He just wanted a simple 'thank you' on his way out the door. And, just as badly, he wanted to say 'thank you' for everything the organization has meant to and given to him," said Decker.

Could Taylor Decker Be a Fit for the Chicago Bears

Playing for the Chicago Bears could be an option for him. According to Decker, it was only his former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, to whom he really talked during this "awkward split.”

Decker told Rogers that it was a “stark contrast” for him after hearing back from Ben Johnson, who says he has his back. If Decker still wants to play, then playing for Detroit's divisional rival could be an option for him. 

A reunion with Johnson could be a win-win. Decker would get a familiar new home, and the Bears would gain a short-term solution at left tackle. Decker could replace Ozzy Trapilo, who is recovering from a ruptured (or torn) patellar tendon in his knee. 

However, the Bears are also dealing with significant cap issues. According to OvertheCap.com, the Chicago Bears only have $243,000 cap space, which again might act as a deal breaker between both parties.

Decker’s return for the 2026 NFL season is still uncertain, but he definitely has a soft spot for his former home.
