The Detroit Lions have unexpectedly found themselves in a legal battle despite not being accused of any wrongdoing. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has been pursuing legal action against the NFL since February 2022, and the United States Supreme Court has dropped an update.

Flores sued the league and three teams in February 2022, alleging discriminatory hiring practices in coaching opportunities. According to the latest reports, the Supreme Court declined to intervene on Tuesday, May 26.

The league wanted the dispute handled through arbitration, which is a private legal process often used to settle disagreements outside of regular court. However, justices rejected that request.

Flores originally sued the league along with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Houston Texans. The decision has renewed focus on the 25 NFL teams subpoenaed during the discovery phase, including the Detroit Lions.

ESPN reported that Flores’ legal team has been looking to get the hiring records and communications related to his lawsuit. There is no indication that the Lions committed any wrongdoing or violated league hiring procedures during previous coaching searches.

The NFL said it respects the Supreme Court of the United States decision, even though the ruling did not go in its favor. The league also said it is ready to continue fighting the case as it moves forward in court.

Meanwhile, the plaintiffs’ lawyers, David Gottlieb and Douglas Wigdor, welcomed the decision

“The NFL must now accept that its commissioner cannot be the arbitrator over discrimination claims against the league and its teams,” they said in a statement.

Detroit has followed a structured process involving interviews and front-office searches. The Lions had partnered with the Fritz Pollard Alliance, an organization that assists NFL teams during executive and coaching searches.

Flores’ lawyers are basically casting a giant net across the NFL to gather emails, interview records, hiring communications, and internal discussions related to hiring of coaches and the Rooney Rule.

The Lions face no direct accusations of wrongdoing because when Flores was fired from the Miami Dolphins in January 2022, current Lions head coach Dan Campbell had already been hired a year earlier.

Detroit followed the Rooney Rule since it had held interviews for Anthony Lynn, Robert Saleh, Marvin Lewis, Eric Bieniemy, and Todd Bowles during the search.
