Three decades after carving out his own championship legacy in Green Bay, Antonio Freeman watched his son deliver under the lights in Seattle at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The milestone goal turned into a proud full-circle moment for the Freeman family.

Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Freeman expressed his feelings as his son emerged as an impressive defender with the United States men's national soccer team during the FIFA World Cup.

“To be honest, and I’m not just saying this because I’m his dad, but Alex is different,” Freeman said. “It’s exciting to see, but it’s exciting to know that all those talks that he and I have about staying ready when your number’s called."

From Weston FC Academy to Orlando Academy, and today, Alex represents the Spanish giant Villareal FC at the young age of 21.

"He didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for those moments," his father, Anotnio Freeman, continued. "He’s moved to Villarreal. These are small things that just happened. And he had to get ready if he wasn’t ready. That’s all we talk about is 'be ready', 'stay ready'. So, when your number’s called, you can be the best you.”

While speaking on the @ussoccer YouTube video, Freeman revealed the hard work behind the scenes. He talked about the mindset that has helped Alex throughout his football career.

Moving to Villarreal came with many challenges, with limited time to settle into the new environment while also competing for opportunities. Freeman was consistently focused on his son's preparation because he didn't want his son to miss any opportunity.

Alex became one of the brightest young defenders in soccer, as he has featured in three of the four matches played by the US Men's National team thus far.

Antonio Freeman knows well what it takes to succeed under pressure. The Super Bowl champion built his NFL career spending nine seasons with the Packers, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors with consistency, and gave his best during crucial moments.

These same values have become a part of Alex's development as he continues to mark himself in soccer.

While Antonio Freeman's words revealed a father's immense pride, his son, Alex, has now shared how those lessons shaped his own remarkable rise.

Alex Freeman described that representing the United States at the FIFA World Cup was a dream come true. He acknowledged the influence of his father, Antonio Freeman.

“It feels like a full circle moment for my family and me," Freeman told FIFA. "It’s amazing to have a father who has been so successful and such a great mentor to me. He taught me to be ready for moments like these and to believe that I can write my own story too."

According to the LA Times, Alex felt pressured to follow the steps of his father, who loved American football but secretly loved soccer.

He shared how his father's philosophy has helped him in transitioning from a promising talent into one of the best defenders.

Team USA started with a thrilling 4-1 victory over Paraguay, where Alex made an assist. After their 2-0 win over the Socceroos, the USA made it to the Round of 32 of this year's tournament, where they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina by another 2-0 margin to advance.

Now, they will face Belgium on July 6th for their Round of 16 game.
