The Detroit Lions are developing rapidly under HC Dan Campbell, but questions stay about the team's ability to consistently develop at the cornerback position. With uncertainty in the Lions' secondary, an old decision has once again come under scrutiny.

After Darius Slay's departure in 2020, a move that still impacts the franchise, the Lions invested in multiple draft picks and free-agent signings. Since then, the Lions have not been able to establish the same level of stability that Slay once provided.

"The Detroit Lions have not been able to find success drafting and developing cornerbacks since the departure of Darius Slay back in 2019," wrote John Maakaron on Sports Illustrated. "Former general manager Bob Quinn made the decision to ship the former second-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles after disagreements with Matt Patricia."

According to John Maakaron of Sports Illustrated, the disagreements between former HC Detroit Lions, Matt Patricia, and Slay(CB) seven years ago became one of the most controversial storylines of Detroit's previous system.

Bob Quinn, who was general manager of the Lions (2016-2020), backed his head coach to trade away one of the franchise's best defensive players.

Years later, the decision is still debated as the Lions have struggled to replace Slay even after heavy investments.

The former first-round pick, Jeff Okudah, failed to become the shutdown defender the franchise had hoped for, while more recent investments have also shown inconsistent results.

Again in 2026, the Lions are dealing with the same uncertainty with changes to the CB room, leaving veteran Rock Ya-Sin and D.J. Reed expected to stabilize the secondary line.

But their contributions were far from Slay's best season (2017) for the Lions with a league-high eight interceptions and 26 pass breakups

Even now, the secondary still continues to be seen as weak. Even after the Lions have become contenders, sorting the cornerback position is one of their biggest challenges.

NFL analyst comments on Brad Holmes' era and continued cornerback woes

After GM Bob Quinn was fired after the 2020 season, the Lions turned to Brad Holmes to reshape the roster. However, the franchise's struggles at cornerback kept ongoing.

"After general manager Bob Quinn was dismissed and Brad Holmes was hired, the situation did not improve much," wrote Maakaron of Sports Illustrated in his same article as above.

Following Slay's trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit invested in many draft picks, including Jeff Okudah, Ifeatu Melifonwu, Chase Lucas, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Terrion Arnold, and Keith Abney II.

While each came with promise, injuries, inconsistent play, position changes, or limited opportunities have prevented the Lions from finding another No. 1 cornerback.
