The signing of QB Jared Goff was the biggest trade that took place in the history of the Detroit Lions back in 2021. The quarterback was traded from the Los Angeles Rams for Matthew Stafford.

While speaking on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast, the Rams’ head coach Sean McVay has finally confessed and expressed his regret of releasing Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions without giving any closure to the quarterback. 

“I’m supersensitive to what an amateur I was with the Goff situation, you know, trading him,” McVay said. “You say, ‘Well, why do you say that?’ You want to talk about lack of courage, lack of clarity, lack of ability to be able to look someone in the eye that you’ve had a lot of really cool experiences with and tell him, ‘Hey, not easy to say, but we might explore an opportunity to acquire Matthew Stafford, and you’ll be part of a trade there.’"

The deal took place back in 2021. The deal consists of Jared Goff with two first-round picks (2022, 2023) and a third-round pick for Stafford. 

McVay acknowledged his lack of professional clarity during the transition.

“Hey, there’s a possibility that we’ll explore some avenues that might lead to you not being our quarterback moving forward’? No. Would I do it differently now? Absolutely,” McVay showed his will to make things right with Goff.

Although the trade was a win-win for both parties, Stafford won a ring for the Rams, and Goff became the much-needed signal caller for the Lions. 

Goff continued to perform for the Lions in his last season, appearing in all 17 games while throwing for 4,564 yards and scoring 34 TDs. 

After the podcast aired, fans quickly voiced support for the quarterback.

Jared Goff Fans React Strongly to Sean McVay’s Honest Confession

Head coach Sean McVay finally admits his fault in the way things ended with Jared Goff has reopened an old frustration among the fans, especially those who believed Goff was unfairly blamed during the final years of his Los Angeles Rams tenure.

One fan did not hold back at all. “Man apologizing now, but let's not act like what he did was mad immature like dude was 35 years old and acting like a kid like brah.”

That reaction reflected a larger feeling among fans who believed McVay handled the quarterback situation emotionally instead of professionally during the Rams’ transition away from Goff.

Others connected the moment to McVay’s handling of Cooper Kupp. The Rams unceremoniously released him due to the physical decline he sustained with a series of injuries. 

“He handled the Kupp situation years later even worse. What a b***,” one fan wrote, arguing that the coach has repeated similar patterns with veteran players.

Some fans also questioned the timing behind the confession itself. “Easy to say this when you get a ring,” another user posted, suggesting the apology feels safer now that McVay already secured a Super Bowl title after moving on from Goff.

Still, not every reaction was negative. “Takes a man to say this. He knows he was childish,” one supporter commented while acknowledging McVay publicly owning his mistakes.

One user expressed disbelief by writing, “This is AI,” showing his complete disbelief in McVay’s apology. 

The fans' reactions have again shown that, irrespective of the teams, Jared Goff is loved in the NFL community.
