Detroit Lions tight end Sam Laporta (87) arrives ahead of Cincinnati Bengals game at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025.
After grinding in the OTAs with a fully recovered back, the Motor City’s tight end, Sam LaPorta, has a life-altering announcement for the fans.
Per the Detroit Times, the Detroit Lions’ power couple is expecting their first child. Callahan Dellinger LaPorta shared the news on her Instagram.
With social media chock-full of congratulatory messages and well-wishes, some fans felt otherwise, making them take lower blows at the couple’s news.
The Highland, Illinois, native Sam LaPorta faced heavy mockery from the fans on the pregnancy announcement as he struggled with his constant lower back issues.
During the last NFL season, LaPorta faced a series of injuries that highly impacted his efficiency and availability in playing the season-winning football.
During Week 10 victory against the Washington Commanders, LaPorta suffered a season-ending fully herniated disc on November 9, 2025.
Even after regular rehab, he showed no sign of improvement. He also underwent lower-back surgery back in mid-November 2025, which eventually landed him on the injured reserve list.
Due to the injury, the Lions TE only appeared in nine games, covering 489 yards and just three touchdowns.
Based on the recent updates, the Lions star has completed his OTAs at the Allen Park Training Facility for the beginning of Training Camp in preparation for the upcoming 2026 NFL campaign.
LaPorta’s happy moment does not suit everyone on social media, making the couple have to face strong reactions from some fans.
Social Media Erupts After Sam LaPorta Shares Pregnancy News
The LaPorta family received plenty of blessings from the NFL community after sharing their pregnancy announcement. Still, some Lions fans quickly turned the moment into a series of disrespectful jokes centered on the tight end’s health and appearance.
Several reactions focused on LaPorta’s previous lower back issues. One fan sarcastically commented, “status post op spine surgery confirmed 100% #congrats,” turning the moment of happy announcement into a dull one.
Others also followed a similar theme.
“This is as close to a positive back update we’re gunna get!” one fan wrote, while another added, “So it seems like his back is good to go if he can make babies.”
The fans' inconsiderate behavior continues, as they have connected the pregnancy news to LaPorta’s physical condition.
“Congrats on the s**, Sammy. Spine must be feeling good,” another commenter posted, taking a disrespectful shot at the Lions star.
Not all of the reactions were about football or injuries, though. Some fans focused entirely on LaPorta’s look.
“That mustache needs a Buick Grand National and a mullet,” one fan joked, poking fun at his appearance in the announcement photos.
While many supporters celebrated the news, social media also showed its usual tendency to turn a personal milestone into a running joke.
We congratulate TE Sam LaPorta and his wife on this wonderful blessing and wish them a beautiful journey into parenthood.
