It’s the kind of move that instantly grabs attention.

A proposed trade scenario is now linking a Saints quarterback with Jared Goff, and it’s starting to raise questions about what it could mean for both teams.

From the last few seasons, the Detroit Lions have been able to manage without a backup quarterback (QB), their QB1 Jared Goff, is playing in all the games without any injury. But this might not be the case forever, a better, more reliable option from the New Orleans Saints, Spencer Rattler, could solve the Lions' problem. 

Teddy Bridgewater is back in the Lions as their QB2 but putting him against Rattler during the training camp would bring the best out of them, facilitating the Lions in times of need. 

The 25-year-old Spencer Rattler was selected by the New Saint Orleans as a 150th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. During his career with the Saints, he has played 16 games in which he scored 12 touchdowns.

According to the Pro Football Focus (PFF), he has earned an overall grade of 70.0 for the last season. He threw for 1568 yards, scored 8 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions in the 2025 season.

According to Adam Schefter, the Saints have just signed veteran QB Zach Wilson. This makes it evident that, for being QB2 in the Saints, Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattle will compete in the training camp. 

Shough sits at the PFF rating of 74.6, playing in 11 games, and he threw for 2484 yards. Clearly, all his stats are better than Rattler's, but on the other hand, if we compare him to Bridgewater, who hasn’t played since 2022, he clearly wins the battle day.

What This Proposed Move Means for Jared Goff and the Lions QB Room

Considering a QB2 proposal is not about replacing Jared Goff, but more about strengthening what sits behind him. Jared’s role as the quarterback remains unchanged. What this scenario really highlights is how the team could approach depth at the position of quarterback, especially when the time comes.

If a player like Spencer Rattler enters the picture, it shifts the dynamic inside the QB room. The Lions can use his athleticism and physical efforts and turn him into a reliable dual-threat option.

Although the Saints would not commit the mistake of letting him go, if the Lions are able to add him, he would be a key developmental QB option.

Giving a chance to Rattler would not hurt the Lions’ 2026 campaign. That will also create an internal competition without disrupting the starting structure.

This move will also give the coaching staff flexibility, whether it’s in practice reps, long-term planning, or adjusting if injuries ever come into play.

For Goff, that doesn’t create pressure, it creates support.
