The Detroit Lions made key contract calls this week, and one of them has raised questions. Jack Campbell is at the center of the discussion after a decision that could shape his future.

On April 30th, the Lions reporter Justin Rogers, on his Substack, pointed out how both sides were still in talks despite the latest move.

“Justin Rogers on his Substack chat just now: ‘No need to fret Lions not picking up Campbell's fifth-year,’” the X post from the Section 344 Lions read. “There’s trust between the sides as they work toward a long-term deal.”

Earlier, Fox 2’s Dan Miller also posted details about the team’s decision. His update explained how Detroit handled both Campbell and Jahmyr Gibbs.

“Have learned the @Lions are picking up the 5th year option on RB Jahmyr Gibbs,” Miller wrote. “They will not be picking up the 5th year option on LB Jack Campbell… they will look to work out a long-term deal that makes sense for both sides.”

Gibbs is set to earn about $14.3 million in 2027 under his option. He has been a key part of the offense since entering the league and continues to play a major role.

Campbell’s case is different because of the cost. His fifth-year option was close to $22 million, a number higher than what teams usually pay at his position.

On the field, Campbell recorded 176 tackles last season, along with nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

This move does not close the door on his future with the Detroit Lions. Instead, it shifts the focus to contract talks.

Why The Jack Campbell Situation Option Became Tough for Detroit

With the 2026 NFL Draft now done, teams like Detroit have turned full focus to pending contract calls, like Jack Campbell.

General manager Brad Holmes spoke on the situation last Saturday in his post-draft press conference.

“Yeah, we’re still having those discussions and trying to see what we’re going to do,” Holmes said. “But we’re having open dialogue.”

The price of the option was a major factor. At around $21.9 million, it would have made Campbell the highest-paid inside linebacker in the league.

When asked about the high cost tied to Campbell’s option, Holmes was consistent in his message.

“Yeah, like I said, we’re having dialogue with the agents, and when they happen, you guys will know,” he added.

One key reason behind that number is the way the system works. The formula groups different types of linebackers, including edge rushers, who usually earn more.

Because of that, the value did not fully match Campbell’s role. His strong season also pushed the number higher than expected.

Detroit still values Campbell and wants to keep him. The focus now shifts to finding a deal that works for both sides before he reaches free agency after the 2026 season.
