A recent report has shed light on internal differences within the Detroit Lions, suggesting a disconnect between Dan Campbell and the front office over key roster decisions.

Former Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone revealed on The Schultz Report that Campbell, wanted him to stay with the team. But the front office cited another reason behind letting him go anyway.

“They didn’t come back, like, ‘you weren’t playing well…'”, Anzalone said. “... Dan had told me he wanted me back….it literally just came down to finances, and what they could and couldn’t afford…The front office made decisions of where they wanna invest money, it wasn’t in me, and it is what it is.”

Anzalone was signed by the Lions in 2023 NFL free agency and landed a three-year contract at $18.3 million. He had expressed that he wanted to retire as a Lion, but the front office had other plans.

Detroit gave an extension to linebacker Derrick Barnes instead, which is worth $25.5 million. Barnes is the younger linebacker when compared to Anzalone, who is 31. Tampa Bay was offering him a better opportunity, which he picked up in the end.

"It's hard to lose guys like Alex," Campbell said after the LB left. Anzalone might be in the later stages of his career, but he is still productive. After a dip in 2024, the LB bounced back with 95 total tackles last season.

Derrick Barnes also had a brilliant showing in the 2025 season, but his career longevity was probably why Detroit went ahead with him, and forced Anzalone to seek other options. The linebacker's comment is a big revelation, especially since Campbell claims there is no bad blood between him and general manager Brad Holmes

97.1’s Mike Valenti reported that there are "differences in opinion" between Campbell and Holmes. The discussion centered around direction, roster control, and how aggressive the team should be moving forward.

But Campbell denied any dysfunction in the team.

“Brad and myself do everything together," Campbell said, via Dave Birkett of Detroit Free Press. "And despite what's been out there…we're golden, man. We are as good …we want to win, and we're going to get it…"

Detroit has approched free agency cautiously, and their most expensive signing at the moment is only center Cade Mays. Since money is one the line, regardless of how much Campbell wanted Anzalone to stay, the front office might have convinced him to part ways with him at the end.
