The Detroit Lions are one of the NFL's consistent contenders under head coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff. However, his place on a ranking does not reflect his performance on the field.

In the PFF's July 2 quarterback rankings, Goff was No. 16 even after his remarkable production in the past few seasons. This could be more frustrating for Campbell, who has built Detroit's offense around Goff's strengths.

"He has done nothing but stuff the stat sheet since being traded to the Lions," wrote analysts Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick. "The former No. 1 overall pick leads the league in passing yards (18,205) and passing touchdowns (130) since 2022, and he ranks sixth among qualifying quarterbacks in PFF WAR since 2023."

Wasserman and Chadwick's assessment proves that Goff's numbers in Detroit don't lie. Goff holds a regular season record of 90-60-1 and a 5-4 postseason record.

Yet, they are not enough. He is surpassed by quarterbacks like Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson. The latter two have won the award two times.

Goff may appear underwhelming on PFF's ranking, but it also shows the increasingly competitive QB environment in the NFL. Goff's position on the list does not account for the impact he has made on the team since his arrival.

Goff's impact is beyond just stats. He ranks sixth in PFF's Wins Above Replacement metric, proving he is the leader the Lions thought he was while trading for him.

His decision-making, accuracy, and command over offense have helped improve players like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta.

Goff, who will turn 32 this year, has had a durable career, devoid of major injuries. Most importantly, the 2016 No. 1 pick has remained consistent in his performance, making a case for a different ranking list.

CBS Sports makes final call on Jared Goff's ranking

CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo believes that Jared Goff has already reached the peak of his career. That is, unless the Detroit Lions harbour different ambitions.

"Goff appears to have reached his career arc unless the Lions make another deep playoff run," wrote DeArdo on July 1. "A former No. 1 overall pick, Goff has enjoyed a highly productive career that includes a Super Bowl appearance with the Rams, five Pro Bowl selections, and leading Detroit to its first playoff wins since 1991."

DeArdo placed Goff in Tier 2, labeling it the silver standard of QBs. He believes these QBs have led their team on a playoff run before and hold the capability to do it again.

Goff also transformed the Lions into an NFC contender.

However, with Campbell's roster, expectations have shifted to go beyond the regular season. Another playoff run will not only strengthen Detroit's Super Bowl goals but also mark Goff as one of the NFL's elite QBs.
