Some players make an impact with their production, while others redefine an entire franchise's identity. Since arriving in Detroit, Penei Sewell has done both.
Penei Sewell's latest recognition as the NFL's top offensive tackle prompted Woodward Sports' Neal Ruhl to argue that the Lions star has done far more than anchor Detroit's offensive line. He has transformed the team's identity.
“I say that he is a guy that not only changed the Lions' offensive line…He changed the culture of the Detroit Lions when he stepped on the scene,” Ruhl said. “Like game two or whatever it was against the 49ers, and Nick Bosa was in there trying to clown people, and he stood up and said, 'No, bro. It's not like that here anymore."

While arguing with the co-panelist Terry Foster, Ruhl gave the examples of the renowned confrontations of Penei Sewell with Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers and Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams.
During a second-quarter run play in his rookie season, Penei Sewell stood his ground and confronted Aaron Donald after he grabbed and shoved him following the whistle.
Without missing a beat, Sewell responded, with teammates stepping in to separate the two. The exchange quickly became a defining moment of his toughness.
“Like I give him credit, and I haven't heard anybody in this town do that. He changed the culture,” Ruhl added. “Penei Su did.”
Not just this, he maintained his elite production throughout. In the last season, Sewell appeared in 16 games and played 998 offensive snaps. He maintained a pass block grade of 80.3 and earned a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 95.1.
After the departure of left tackle Taylor Decker, the speculations are high around the switching of Sewell to protect the blind side of Jared Goff.
For his elite run-blocking and unmatched athleticism, he was recently crowned as No.1 among the top 10 offensive tackles in the league.
Penei Sewell receives elite recognition
Penei Sewell has silenced the critics by dominating the latest release of "Execs, coaches, scouts rank top NFL offensive tackles for 2026” by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
"He's still the most complete player at this stage -- physical, powerful, smart," a veteran NFL defensive coach said of Sewell.
It is not the first time that Sewell achieved this feat. Back in 2025, he was ranked No.1 out of the 89 qualified OTs in the PFF rankings.
"He has the most 'f*** you' attitude plays in the league," the exec said. "Always brings the juice."
Many NFL pundits have supported the claim that Sewell is known for his elite production and gameplay. His stats back up the claims.
Even in the speculation of him being switched to LT, he remains focused on delivering the best for the Detroit Lions.
