Jared Goff's young teammate Christian Mahogany has drawn plenty of attention entering 2026, though not everyone is convinced the Lions guard has earned the hype.

Lions analyst Adam Stark of Round Table believes the hype for the starting guard is getting ahead of the production.

"Now, I love the Lions more than the next fan and fully believe every player on the roster is a superstar," wrote Stark on Round Table. "However, when I take a step back and try to be unbiased, there is one player who I believe is a bit overrated. That player is Christian Mahogany."

Stark's argument centered on production. Despite the praise surrounding Mahogany, the Lions guard finished last season with a 59.1 PFF grade and ranked 46th among 81 qualified guards.

Mahogany is critical for Goff's protection scheme, and has earned a Pro Football Focus grade during his rookie appearances, and he started 12 NFL games.

Injuries and inconsistent pass protection limited his impact: 699 snaps, 27 pressures allowed, six sacks, and five quarterback hits, committing two penalties.

Stark acknowledged Mahogany's injury setbacks but argued that the young lineman still has more to prove before being viewed as a cornerstone piece. In his rookie season, he missed six games due to a fractured fibula.

According to Adam Stark, Mahogany is an overrated player until he proves himself without the NFL's best offensive lineman, Cade Mays, beside him, by maintaining and improving his play.

With veteran center Frank Ragnow no longer in the lineup, the spotlight on Mahogany's growth will always be there. Whether the criticism is justified or not, his performance could have a big impact on Goff and the Lions' offense in 2026.

Why Christian Mahogany Still Has Something To Prove

The scrutiny around Mahogany is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Detroit has several offensive linemen competing for roles, meaning the former draft pick will have to earn his spot rather than simply being handed one.

Rookie Miles Frazier is pushing for a larger role, while Giovanu Manu has impressed coaches with his versatility at both tackle and guard.

"Although nothing seems to indicate that the team is fully sold on anything other than Cade Mays at center, and Penei Sewell at left tackle," wrote reporter Candace Pedraza on FanSided. "And that level of competition is exactly what they're seeking this offseason."

With Ben Bartch, Mahogany, Frazeir, Manu, and Juice Scruggs all competing for spots, the Lions have a crowded offensive line room.

The head coach, Dan Campbell, explained that the competition can strengthen protection for Jared Goff(QB) while helping create running lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs(RB) and Isiah Pacheco (RB).

Whether Stark's assessment proves accurate will be decided on the field. With increased competition and expectations still high, Mahogany enters 2026 with a chance to either silence the criticism or give it more fuel.
