Jared Goff gives the Detroit Lions stability at quarterback, but questions remain about the depth behind him. With training camp underway, that backup situation is drawing renewed attention.

Detroit made several moves this offseason but left its quarterback room unchanged behind Goff. Cem Yolbulan of Detroit Jock City believes that could become a problem.

"Detroit may have one of the worst backup quarterback rotations in the league," Yolbulan wrote.

As per the report by Cem Yolbulan, the criticism centers on the Lions' decision to bring back veteran Teddy Bridgewater as the No. 2 quarterback while relying on undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer for additional depth.

Goff has not missed a game over the past four seasons, but the lack of proven options behind him could become an issue if that streak ends.

That concern is shared elsewhere. CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan recently ranked the Lions 15th among 16 Super Bowl contenders in terms of backup quarterback situations, placing only the Buffalo Bills lower.

Sullivan pointed to the experience available across the league. Teams such as the Eagles, Rams, Packers and Bears all enter camp with more established competition behind their starters.

On the other hand, the Lions are largely counting on Bridgewater's veteran presence and Altmyer's development.

If Goff stays healthy, the issue may never surface. But if injuries force Detroit to turn elsewhere, the Lions could find themselves in a much different position than many of their NFC rivals.

Amid the chatter around the QB depth chart behind Goff, the Lions' new offensive coordinator could help Goff elevate his passing game.

Drew Petzing's arrival could still elevate Jared Goff

Even with questions surrounding the backup quarterbacks, there is growing optimism about what Goff can accomplish under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.

According to Side Lions Report's Michael Colwander, Petzing's offensive approach could unlock another level in Detroit's passing attack.

Colwander noted that Goff averaged just 6.0 intended air yards per attempt under former coordinator John Morton, showing how often the offense relied on shorter throws.

Petzing's offenses have historically pushed the ball further downfield, something he previously did while working with Jacoby Brissett.

That philosophy could fit well with Detroit's receiving group, led by Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and rookie Isaac TeSlaa.

More aggressive downfield concepts may allow Goff to build on last season, when he threw for 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns.

The Lions will begin testing that partnership once training camp opens.

While the backup quarterback debate is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, Detroit remains confident that Goff and Petzing can keep one of the NFC's most talented offenses among the league's best.
