Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has made his frustration clear as he waits for a contract extension. The 2023 second-round pick is in the final year of his rookie deal, leaving his future in Detroit uncertain.
Speaking on Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take podcast, LaPorta explained why the contract situation has disappointed him. He believes his sacrifices and performances have not earned the recognition he deserves.
The 25-year-old pointed to the serious back injury he suffered last season. The tight end also highlighted his strong performances for the Lions this year, despite the physical risks involved:
“It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, I broke my fu**ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love.”
His comments reflect growing frustration over the lack of an extension. The Lions have yet to agree to a new deal, and the delay appears to have tested his patience.
Sam LaPorta leaves door open to leaving Detroit after season
Sam LaPorta remains focused on performing, regardless of how his contract situation develops.
He acknowledged that he could leave Detroit in three months if the two sides fail to reach an agreement. LaPorta also made clear that he would be comfortable continuing his career elsewhere. He believes he can find another team willing to pay him what he deserves.
Detroit now faces an important decision about its long-term plans for the tight end. Without an extension, the Lions risk losing a key offensive weapon, while LaPorta could seek a fresh start elsewhere.
