NFL veteran explains why Sam LaPorta could grow resentful toward the Detroit Lions

Sam LaPorta's recent comments have drawn attention to his contract situation with the Detroit Lions. An NFL veteran has now weighed in on what could be behind the tight end's frustration.

Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh discussed LaPorta's remarks on Pregame. He believes the tight end remains angry about how his contract situation has unfolded:

“He's speaking out because it's frustrating for him. The way he said that: 'I broke my fu**ing back.' He's still angry about that.”

Houshmandzadeh suggested that players can grow resentful when teams expect them to play through physical setbacks but hesitate when it is time to pay up. That disconnect can damage the relationship between a player and his team:

“It creates so much animosity with the team.”

His assessment highlights the potential consequences for Detroit if the frustration continues to grow.

Detroit Lions could face a difficult contract decision with their star tight end

T.J. Houshmandzadeh also explained how contract disputes can change a player's approach to negotiations as the season progresses.

Someone who feels undervalued might eventually decide to abandon in-season talks and wait until the offseason to explore his options. Such a decision could complicate Detroit's efforts to reach an agreement. The longer negotiations remain unresolved, the more difficult it could become to bridge the gap between the player's expectations and the team's position.

The Lions may therefore need to consider how they approach the situation to prevent contract discussions from creating further tension.
