The story behind Kalif Raymond's move from Detroit to Chicago is more than just a standard transaction. According to The Athletic's Dan Pompei, the receiver's departure left teammates in tears.

According to Dan Pompei of The Athletic, the moving of wide receiver Kalif Raymond wasn’t just about routine roster depth. It caught people inside the Lions' locker room off guard and revealed the emotional impact it had on the team.

The reaction wasn’t quiet either. It hit especially hard for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Raymond’s teammate and one of his closest friends on the roster. What looked like a standard move from the outside carried real weight inside the building.

“On decision day, there were tears and a heartfelt conversation with St. Brown, his locker partner and one of his best friends,” Pompei wrote.

That detail says everything about Raymond’s role in Detroit. He was part of the culture the Lions built over the past few seasons.

The 31-year-old Kalif Raymond started his career with the Denver Broncos. He was selected by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent (UDFA) in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Holy Cross.

Later, he joined the Detroit Lions in 2021, after his small stints with the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans. 

Playing for five seasons with the Lions, he appeared in 77 games and covered 2,185 yards in the field while scoring 8 touchdowns. A big contributor to this success was the offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

More than the numbers, Raymond clearly had an emotional impact on the locker room over the last five years.

But now, the receiver has publicly spoken about wanting to reunite with his former coach in Chicago.

Kalif Raymond Chose Chicago Over Several Other NFL Teams

Last year, Ben Johnson left for a head coaching opportunity with the Chicago Bears. Now, a year later, Raymond wants to reunite with his former coach in Chicago to keep producing top numbers.

“I wanted to play in Ben’s offense,” Raymond said, via Dan Pompei. “He’s extraordinarily creative, and honestly, you can be in any spot on the offense, and he will find a way to get you the ball. Just to be under him is a great privilege.”

Kalif Raymond is headed to the Chicago Bears on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, with $3 million guaranteed.

The decision was ultimately crystal clear for Raymond, even if it meant rejecting last year's Lombardi trophy winners.

“The Seahawks and 49ers were also in pursuit, but his choice came down to the Lions and Bears," according to Dan Pompei. "Raymond’s feelings for Campbell, the organization, and the community ran deep, and the pull to stay was powerful.”

Although it's a loss on the Lions’ end, it would be interesting to see what the Detroit Lions do next, with many fans still waiting for a big-money move this offseason.
