After spending his first four NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions, Jahmyr Gibbs is all set to renew his contract. Now, fresh reports suggest the running back could be taking a step forward for the upcoming seasons.

According to Adam Schefter's guest appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, there is a good chance that Gibbs’ contract will be renewed in the coming days, The Detroit Times reported.

Schefter later revealed that the Lions would like to have a new contract for Gibbs this summer.

“Yeah, I think this is a whole work-in-progress, because there are a lot of players that have to get paid there. Jahmyr Gibbs, I would think would be next,” Schefter said. “A deal at some point this summer for Gibbs, (Atlanta Falcons RB) Bijan Robinson. Those are gonna be big, blockbuster deals.”

The insider also emphasized other signings that could strengthen the squad. He revealed that Detroit wants to re-sign tight end Sam LaPorta as well, seeing his impressive offensive talent.

However, the contract extensions for linebacker Jack Campbell and now Gibbs will certainly cut down the franchise's salary cap significantly. 

"Now, it’s gonna be harder, because they’ve got to pay these guys who are on rookie contracts the money that they deserve, and that creates less flexibility elsewhere on the roster,” he said. 

“I would think they’re going to continue to work to get the rest of these deals done this summer,” Schefter concluded.

It seems like the renewal of Gibbs' contract isn't far off, seeing as the 2026 season is beginning in September.

Jahmyr Gibbs Had A Solid 2025 Season For The Lions

The Lions selected Gibbs in the first round (12th overall pick) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He appeared in all 17 games for the franchise in the 2025 season. That season, they went 9-8 and fell just short of the NFL postseason.

In 2025, Gibbs managed 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns. It’s hard to take him out for the pass game. During his tenure the team has done well in pass-catching options this offseason.

During an appearance on The Season with Peter Schrager, the Lions GM Brad Holmes said, "He [Gibbs] is a Weapon."

In each of his first three NFL seasons with Detroit, he earned Pro Bowl selections and joined Barry Sanders and Billy Sims as the only running backs in history to achieve that feat. 

With such success, Gibbs will hopefully get his contract in hand soon and continue to be an asset the Lions can rely on.
