Six-time Pro Bowler Darius Slay announced his retirement Monday via an Instagram post, bringing his 13-year career to a close. He called football his “peace” and “joy,” making it clear what the game meant to him. For fans, it feels like saying goodbye to a familiar presence every Sunday.

“Dear football, I wanna thank you for all you’ve done for me. I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level…”

The 35-year-old athlete was first drafted by the Detroit Lions as a 36th overall pick (second round) in 2013 from Mississippi State. He played seven seasons with the Detroit Lions, appearing in 103 games. 

Recording 333 total tackles, defending 104 passes, with 19 successful interceptions, covering 265 yards, 1 forced fumble, and 1 sack. 

Later, he landed with the Philadelphia Eagles for a three-year contract for $50 million. He stayed with the Eagles for five seasons, appearing in 74 games, scoring 254 successful total tackles, and defending 57 passes with 9 interceptions. He covered 204 yards with 1 forced fumble. 

Finally joining the Pittsburgh Steelers for a one-year contract as a UFA, playing 10 games, making 36 total tackles, and getting 3 PDEF.

Darius Slay built a decorated career highlighted by a Super Bowl LIX win with the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2017 and was selected to six Pro Bowls. 

Known as “Big Play Slay,” he gained recognition as a shutdown cornerback, consistently matching up against top receivers.
