Jason Kelce has a problem with the Detroit Lions. The recently retired Eagles legend took to social media to defend center Frank Ragnow, blasting the Lions' policy of asking players to return signing bonus money after injury-forced retirements. His stance has ignited a firestorm among fans.

Amid the Frank Ragnow controversy, the former Philadelphia Eagles star has come to the defense of center Ragnow.. He took the moment and shared a long post on his X, where he pushed back on the Lions’ long-held policy.

“I think it’s b******* Frank is being asked to return money,” Jason Kelce said on his X account. “This was clearly a player that the game had physically taken its toll on, and his body was clearly no longer holding up to the rigors of the NFL.” 

For Kelce, the situation around Frank Ragnow is anything but straightforward. He even pushed back on the idea of a “voluntary” retirement, pointing instead to years of relentless injuries that left Ragnow with little real choice.

He emphasized that signing bonuses are designed for moments exactly like this, when a player’s body gives out before the contract does.

While teams may have grounds to reclaim money in typical retirements, Kelce made it clear this is not one of those cases, framing Ragnow’s exit as the cost of enduring far more than most ever would.

“Frank was known for being hurt and playing through injuries most players wouldn’t play through constantly,” he said. “Broken foot, a torn pec, multiple knee injuries, back issues.”

According to Kelce, this is where the bonus kicks in for a player. 

Frank Ragnow was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 2018 NFL Draft as a first-round, 20th overall pick.

The four-time Pro Bowler appeared in at least 14 games for all but two (2021 and 2025) of his NFL seasons in his seven years with the franchise.

Kelce's reaction was just one among many across the NFL who feel similarly. Fans have been increasingly vocal about the same.

Once Kelce shared his opinion, fan reactions poured in, covering every angle of the controversy.

Some focused on the contract side of things.

“I disagree with the 3rd paragraph. If a team wants to pay a player based on his year-by-year availability, pay it as roster bonus or game salary. A signing bonus is a signing BONUS,” one fan wrote.

The argument here was clear: once a deal is signed, teams shouldn’t try to rework the logic behind it. Meanwhile, others pointed to timing and how it impacted the Detroit Lions. 

“To be fair, the timing of his decision really hurt the team…after free agency and draft,” one fan said,

While the user highlighted how roster planning can get thrown off in situations like this, another fan pushed back.

“Active players get the best medical assistance maybe in the world…players should always report to camp and if hurt go on IR.” the take read. 

That brought the debate back to player responsibility versus team expectations. Then came the frustration directed at the franchise itself.

“This feels like a situation where they’re essentially saying we made a bad decision before, so we’re doing it again,” one comment read while another didn't hold back at all, “Lions should change their policy…they look like complete j***…Same Old Lions front office.”
