A new NFL rule could have changed DK Metcalf's 2025 season. The league just approved a measure directly inspired by his sideline scuffle with a Detroit Lions fan.

During the 2026 Annual League Meeting, the NFL league owners approved the rule change regarding the incident involving the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver DK Metcalf.

"The NFL has approved a rule change allowing the league to consult with on-field officials on potential disqualifications (both flagrant football acts and non-football acts) and place a flag on the field," reported the NFL's Ari Meirov on X.

While Metcalf wasn't ejected mid-game right after the incident, this could soon change for similar occurrences.

"Essentially, as an example, it’s the DK Metcalf situation," The X post further read. "After he wasn’t ejected last year following his incident with a Lions fan because there was no flag. That now changes.

The context traces back to a heated moment during a Lions game where Metcalf was involved in a sideline exchange that extended toward the stands. Metcalf swiped at a Lions fan, Ryan Kennedy, during the match, and was later not ejected from the game. 

During the game, the on-field officials did not see Metcalf involved in any wrongdoing. Despite the multiple camera angles hinting at his involvement, he continued the game. 

In that match, he had three receptions while covering 37 yards in the second half. 

Eventually, Metcalf was suspended for two games, which led to him missing a crucial playoff decider against the Baltimore Ravens on Week 17.

According to an NFL official, the officials can only move for a potential disqualification once a flag is thrown. But during that situation, no flag was thrown, and hence he was allowed to continue.

But this new rule allows the league office to signal down to the on-field officials that they should throw a flag, or even eject Metcalf and throw a flag on the play.

What Led to DK Metcalf's Sideline Incident That Sparked Rule Change Talk

The sideline incident has led to more serious consequences.

With Ryan Kennedy now filing a lawsuit seeking over $100 million in damages, claiming reputational and personal harm, the fallout continues to grow.

The incident began as a heated verbal exchange that escalated quickly.

While former NFL receiver Chad Johnson suggested on his podcast that offensive language may have triggered Metcalf’s reaction, Kennedy has firmly denied those allegations, leaving two sharply conflicting versions of a moment.

According to reports, the Lions fan used the “N” word and the “C” word against him. To which he denied all the allegations.

That’s where the situation goes beyond football. Kennedy’s lawsuit from February 2026 includes claims of defamation and assault battery, putting the incident under legal scrutiny.
