Back in 2024, the Detroit Lions were on the verge of lifting the Lombardi Trophy after a phenomenal 15-2 regular season record. However, the Washington Commanders handed them a crushing playoff defeat.

According to one analyst, one fatal flaw caused it all, and its ghost still haunts Detroit today. Over the past two seasons, injuries have been the real monsters that repeatedly derailed the Lions despite them having one of the NFL's most formidable rosters.

“Back in 2024, we thought the Lions had suffered a historic amount of injuries. Then 2025 came along and blew that out of the water. Over the last two seasons, Detroit has been one of the most injured teams in the league, and that kind of track record sticks with a fanbase,” wrote AtoZ Sports analyst Mike Payton.

Detroit ranked 31st in adjusted games lost to injury last season after finishing 25th the year before.

In his July 22 assessment for A to Z Reports, Payton said fans are less worried about the Lions' performance and more concerned about how the team will manage injuries. Although Detroit has opted out of preseason games, the injury concerns remain.

“You can hope that eliminating joint practices helps take some of the harshness off. Not that anyone has ever really gotten hurt at joint practices, but removing that extra wear and tear could soften the blow a little bit. Beyond that, though, there’s just nothing you can do,” wrote Payton.

Injury concerns are real, and rightly so. According to Sports Info Solutions, the Lions lost a staggering 226 player-games to injuries last season. Those absences also cost the team an estimated 89 points over the course of the year.

While the injury concerns are real, head coach Dan Campbell has been handed a warning for the 2026 season.

Heading into the 2026 season, Dan Campbell addressed Detroit’s biggest flaws this offseason. The team did a major overhaul by adding a new offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, while Kelvin Sheppard handles the defense side of things.

With the coaching side taking all the heat, former Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, in his conversation at Woodward Sports Network, believes the Lions coach has no excuses left to fall short.

"Now you have got the offensive line; now you brought in better coaches; now you have a system that works for you; now you even drafted along the lines of what you should be doing,” Edwards said recently on Woodward Sports Network. “There are not a lot of excuses to have for Dan Campbell this year.”

While Dan Campbell has certainly transformed the way the Lions play, the only thing that truly matters now is bringing the Lombardi Trophy to Detroit.
