The signing of quarterback Kyler Murray was not the first choice of the Minnesota Vikings. Previously, there was chatter around the potential trade of Mac Jones from the San Francisco 49ers. But a new report has caused a resurgence of the rumour. 

As reported by Moe Moton of the Bleacher Report, the Vikings would be one of the five teams that could be interested in acquiring the 49ers' star quarterback Mac Jones for their 2026 NFL campaign. 

"The 49ers were willing to trade QB Mac Jones before the draft, but no team met their reportedly steep asking price,” Moton wrote. “If an injury to a starter prompts a team to pony up, would the 49ers deal Jones at some point before the trade deadline on Nov. 3?”

The uncertainty around the Vikings' QB depth is not hidden from anyone in the NFL community. Jones trade might give some relief to the GM, Nolan Teasley.

By looking at the history of the Vikings, Moton believes that the Vikings would not keep Murray for long, as they previously allowed Sam Darnold to walk away after his first Pro Bowl campaign.

Per Spotrac, Jones signing would give them a low-cost QB option as he carries an affordable 2026 cap hit of just $3.13 million and a base cash value of $3.55 million. By which the Vikings will be able to keep him in $13.1 million in cap space.

Also, Jones offers a high-floor, system-oriented backup who can step in seamlessly to protect the offense if the starter QB faces injuries or if a young prospect requires more development time.

As on Pro Football Reference, Jones appeared in 11 games for the 49ers in which he threw for 2,151 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. 

His 69.6% completion rate establishes him as a highly efficient and valuable quarterback, which may also benefit the Vikings in the 2027 NFL season. 

Mac Jones focuses on upcoming NFL season amid trade rumors

Per Moe Moton of the Bleacher Report on a potential trade of Mac Jones, the 49ers' star QB is focused on the upcoming NFL season, as in 2025, he has to fill in for Brock Purdy, who allowed him to start eight out of 11 games. 

While making an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, the 27-year-old QB clarified that he is locked in for the upcoming season.

"The trade deadline is not until a little bit through the season," Jones said. "I try not to keep up with it and really want to just keep getting better. I played decent last year, and I think I can play a lot better, which is what I’m striving to do this summer…”

However, if not this season but before the next, he may be on the move as he plays under the final season of his two-year, $8.4 million contract.

With the trade deadline set for Nov. 3, the San Francisco 49ers may receive an offer that they may or may not pursue to keep Jones.
