The chatter around the Detroit Lions quarterback situation hasn’t gone away. But according to one NFL analyst, there are clear reasons why moving on from Jared Goff was never really on the table.

According to Albert Breer on Sports Illustrated, there were two major reasons why the Detroit Lions are not ready to let their QB, Jared Goff go. 

Based on Albert Breer’s take, the first reason is their aggressive move to acquire receiver Isaac TeSlaa, because of this, the Lions had to lose both of their third-round picks. Because of the same reason, they lost Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets, resulting now they only have two picks for the top 100 players. 

The QB Jared Goff earned a Pro Focus Football (PFF) rating of 77.7 for the last season. During this, he played in all 17 games and threw for 4564 yards, scoring 34 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions. 

So, thinking about another quarterback is out of the picture. Although if they want, they may try it on Day 3, where they will have multiple picks in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds.

And the second reason is the finances.

This 2026 season will be financially heavy on Detroit as the majority of the core talent is going to have their contracts renewed. Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Kerby Joseph are up for their big second deal. 

Whereas Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch, and Jack Campbell are now eligible for new contracts.

To manage this, they need to find talented draftees on cheaper investments. 

Luckily, Jared Goff has a market quarterback deal, because of which they don’t have to spend extra bucks on him.

Through free agency, they have made some progress in their roster rebuilding, but as per the approaches of GM Brad Holmes, they recruit core talent from the drafts only. And with depleting cap space, they won’t be able to afford a developmental quarterback.

Other than his stats, when we look inside the building, the belief in Jared Goff has never really wavered. It’s not just about numbers or game plans, it’s about how he carries the team through different moments. 

Head coach Dan Campbell didn’t hold back when talking about him, saying, “Jared Goff is a stud. He’s an absolute stud. We’re fortunate to have him as a quarterback. He’s a winning quarterback in this league.” 

That kind of backing reflects what the team sees every day. From a front office perspective, the message stays just as clear. 

GM Brad Holmes pointed to stability at the position, saying, “We have a really good quarterback... I’ve got faith that everything will be OK.”

And then there’s how Goff responds under pressure. The former Offensive coordinator John Morton summed it up best.

“He doesn’t blink. He doesn’t blink... there’s times where he’s getting his butt kicked, he just gets right back up. That’s one of his strengths, he’s mentally tough,” he said.
