After the Detroit Lions failed to reach the playoffs following a disappointing 9-8 finish in 2025, criticism around head coach Dan Campbell started gaining traction.
But Chris Brockman and Rich Eisen on the Rich Eisen Show claimed the team is “Perfectly fine.” Pushing back on that notion is Chris Noora, host of Sports Talk Detroit.
“Do you realize we didn't even get to the playoffs for years and years,” Chris Noora said while refuting the claims. “We had like two playoff appearances in 35 years, and here we are now playing four games.”

Campbell succeeded Matt Patricia and took command in Motown in 2021. Since then, he has been building the Lions environment with his “Grit” philosophy.
Before Campbell was in charge, the Lions had a terrible combined record of 14-33-1 under coach Patricia. Consequently, from 2018 to 2020, the Lions finished last in the NFC North division.
“So, by the way, 2021 was just a terrible rebuild…you know, everything,” he said. “Just get things back, like that year doesn't even count.”
Over his five seasons, Campbell has compiled a 48-36-1 regular-season record, giving him the highest winning percentage (.571) of any Lions coach in the Super Bowl era.
After over three decades, the Lions were declared back-to-back division champions in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
As Detroit looks to sustain that championship momentum, Week 1 brings a familiar opponent to Ford Field.
Lions Open Against a Team Dan Campbell Once Coached
The Detroit Lions will host the New Orleans Saints in the season opener on September 13 at Ford Field. And looking at their schedule for this season, the stars are in their favor.
"In the first five weeks, the Lions only play one team, the Buffalo Bills, that was able to secure a playoff victory last season," John Maakaron reported May 17. "Detroit opens up against a Saints team that is still in the early phases of a new regime."
Before joining the Lions, Campbell was employed as the Saints' assistant head coach and tight ends coach for five years.
