The Detroit Lions are in full swing with their OTAs as they prepare for the 2026 season. While much of the focus remains on the team's preparations, one NFL analyst believes this could be a defining year for quarterback Jared Goff and the franchise.

The Lions acquired Goff in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. After joining, he has transformed the Lions into one of the NFC's top contenders. According to Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon, this season is a turning point for Goff and the Lions.

"Jared Goff turns 32 this year, and the Lions have had no playoff success the last two seasons," Gagnon wrote. "Another failure could mark the end of the run, while a successful rebound could keep the window open into Goff's mid-30s."

The Lions have established themselves as one of the NFC's most consistent teams and have remained in the playoff conversation throughout Goff's tenure. 

However, the franchise is still searching for the breakthrough run after they fell short in the final stretch last season and failed to make it into the playoffs.

The Lions began the season strong, routing Chicago 52–21 in Week 2 and topping 34 points in three straight games.

Detroit then lost their momentum late in the season. They lost three games in December, eliminating stakes from the regular-season finale. They ended the season with a fourth-place finish in the NFC North.

Gagnon's comment came after Goff played some of the best football of his career. The former No. 1 overall pick threw for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions during the 2025 season. 

The quarterback had a productive year, but Detroit failed to capitalize in key games. Last season's performance has created immense pressure on the Lions as they look to bounce back this season.

Detroit's Championship Window Faces Bigger Questions

With Goff’s age, the pressure is on the Lions to turn regular-season success into a deep playoff run.

The Lions have one of the NFC's most talented rosters under general manager Brad Holmes. However, several key players are now approaching major contract decisions, including Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Those picks are starting to look even more essential to any long-term plan Holmes might build to keep Detroit’s window open.

The Lions still have a strong foundation led by Goff, Aidan Hutchinson, Gibbs, and Jameson Williams, but opportunities to compete for a Super Bowl are still in question.

That's because of the questions that are looming. Detroit has needed another strong pass rusher next to Hutchinson for some time, but they still haven’t made a major move to fix it.

On the other hand, teams like the Los Angeles Rams have made that type of upgrade a clear priority and taken action to address it.
