Opinions regarding the NFL's best quarterbacks are divided whenever Jared Goff and Justin Herbert are mentioned. Former NFL All-Pro Braylon Edwards named a former Los Angeles Chargers head coach who should be kept in mind during such conversations.

In a recent episode of the Woodward Sports podcast, Edwards placed Herbert ahead of Goff. While he acknowledged Herbert's talent, he argued that coaching circumstances have shaped how both quarterbacks are perceived around the league.

"Who is Justin Herbert at? Brandon Staley?" Edwards said. "One of the worst coaches in the last 25 years, different offensive coordinators every single season. Give Justin Herbert that same time with Sean McVay. Give him that same time with Ben Johnson. We're having a different conversation."

Edwards argued that Goff has benefited from continuity under head coaches Sean McVay in Los Angeles and Ben Johnson in Detroit, per the July 10 episode of the Woodward Sports podcast.

Meanwhile, Herbert spent much of his career adapting to coaching changes, including former Chargers HC Brandon Staley. Edwards' comment suggested that he did not hold the coach in high regard.

In his view, that stability has allowed Goff to maximize his strengths, whereas Herbert has rarely enjoyed the same environment. Overall, Edwards leaned toward Goff, and the numbers supported his view.

The Lions quarterback threw for 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns against only eight interceptions in 2025. Herbert, on the other hand, finished with 3,727 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Jared Goff is running a more efficient offense than Justin Herbert," the former wide receiver said.

The debate may continue, but the Chargers are already trying to help Herbert take another step.

Chargers tweak Herbert's mechanics ahead of 2026

Herbert has still made a small adjustment ahead of the new season. According to ESPN's Kris Rhim, new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has changed the quarterback's stance, with Herbert now lining up with his left foot slightly forward instead of his right.

Herbert suggested the adjustment has not dramatically changed his approach.

"I don't think it's too much of a difference," he said.

McDaniel, however, believes the adjustment can create a "millisecond competitive advantage" by helping Herbert get the ball out quicker on run-pass options and other quick-developing plays.

The coach previously used similar techniques while working with quarterbacks in Miami.

What is left to be seen is whether these minute changes can truly make a significant difference in Justin Herbert's performance this upcoming season.
