The NFL lost one of its standout defensive backs from the 1980s on Wednesday, July 1. Former Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions cornerback LeRoy Irvin, a two-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, has died at the age of 68.

The Los Angeles Rams announced Irvin's passing in a statement on Thursday, July 2, but did not disclose the cause of death or any additional details.

"We mourn the loss of Rams Legend LeRoy Irvin. We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time," the team said.

Irvin spent 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Rams after being selected in the third round of the 1980 NFL Draft out of Kansas. He finished his playing career with the Detroit Lions in 1990.

During his NFL career, Irvin appeared in 159 games and recorded 35 interceptions, five returned for touchdowns. He earned first-team All-Pro honors thrice, was selected to two Pro Bowls, and became one of the league's top cornerbacks during the 1980s.

As tributes poured in, Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson remembered his former teammate and close friend.

“Leroy wasn’t just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy,” Dickerson wrote on Instagram. “Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

Many remembered his career achievements and also proved why he is known as the Rams’ greatest defensive player. 

Irvin leaves behind a lasting legacy with the Rams

Following the news of his death, many across the NFL took a moment to remember Irvin's career and his legacy. 

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, freelance sports journalist Eric Geller said Irvin died Wednesday after a long battle with throat cancer, though the Rams have not confirmed a cause of death.

Irvin still holds an NFL record that has stood for more than four decades. During a 1981 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, he returned six punts for 207 yards, including touchdown returns of 75 and 84 yards.

After retiring from football, Irvin remained involved in the game through coaching, broadcasting, and business ventures.

His combination of elite coverage skills and playmaking ability made him the most accomplished defensive back of his era.
