The Detroit Lions have a new offensive coordinator, and he is already praising Jared Goff. Drew Petzing, formerly with the Cardinals, shared his candid thoughts on the Lions' quarterback. His assessment directly addresses one of the biggest criticisms Goff faces.

Since the 2021 season, the Lions have changed their offensive coordinator four times, and their newest OC, Drew Petzing, has already shared his thoughts about long-time QB Jared Goff.

The former Arizona Cardinals OC's assessment directly addresses one of the biggest criticisms Goff faces.

“He’s been awesome. He’s as impressive as a quarterback as I’ve seen watching tape. I think it's one of those things when you're not in the division. I think we played them two years ago, but we didn’t have a ton of overlap. But it’s like you see them, you watch a couple games on TV here and there, and you're like, ‘Oh, it seems like he’s playing well,’" said Petzing.

The Lions and Cardinals faced off in the 2024 season, where Goff threw for 199 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The Lions won the game 20-13, and that performance earned Goff a passer rating of 113.6.

Petzing then talked about how the Lions OC interview gave him the chance to watch the tape. "Appreciate how good he really is and what level he’s been playing at these last couple years,” he added. It's not surprising considering how Jared Goff has racked up some pretty awesome numbers in the last 2 years.

He has a passer rating of 108.5 with 9,193 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in 34 games since 2024. Goff is the First NFL QB ever to finish a game with a 100 % completion percentage on at least 15 pass attempts. He went 18‑for‑18 against the Seattle Seahawks in 2024.

Petzing Also Addressed a Big Jared Goff Criticism

Many have criticized Jared Goff for being a pure pocket passer.
That's true to some extent since he has rushed for only 45 yards in the 2025 season, but that is no problem for Petzing.

“Yes, he’s a pocket passer, but he’s made some great plays in the keeper game, on the move. There’s just so many things that I think he does at a really high level, that again, it all goes back to what puts stress on a defense," the new Lions' OC said.

In the Lions’ 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears, Goff made a play on the move when the pocket collapsed. He stepped up under pressure and delivered an off-platform throw downfield for a chain-moving 14-yard gain to Kalif Raymond.

The Athletic's Colton Pouncey believes Petzing will have a positive impact on Goff. "Having learned from Norv Turner, Gary Kubiak, and Stefanski, Petzing will continue the under-center system the Lions have used with Goff, along with a heavy dose of play-action," he wrote.
