There are rumors of former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby becoming the backup for the Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff. But that has started conversations among analysts and fans if Detroit should invest in a player who remains unproven at the NFL level.

"He is going to declare for the supplemental draft," said analyst Neal Ruhl on the Woodward Sports podcast. "So, like at a QB thing for people, there are like your backup for Jared Goff. To get him, you have to get what? Second round pick, probably. The more it costs you in draft capital to get involved. I am out. I was out anyway."

In the Supplemental Draft, the teams will have to give up a 2027 draft pick to select Sorsby. According to reports, Sorsby possesses first-round talent.

But if he goes undrafted, he will be free to sign with any of the 32 NFL teams. The last QB selected through the Supplemental Draft was Terrelle Pryor by the Raiders in 2011. Las Vegas gave up its third-round pick for him.

No player has been taken in the first round since 1992. The New York Giants selected quarterback Dave Brown that year.

So, it is highly unlikely any team will surrender a first-round asset for Sorsby. However, because he possesses elite arm talent, a quarterback-needy franchise will almost certainly use a mid-round pick to lock him.

Detroit already has one of the league's most reliable starters, Jared Goff, who has led the franchise into an historic NFC Championship, earning three Pro Bowl selections (2022, 2024, and 2025) and a record of 48-33-1 with the Lions.

Apart from him, the Lions also have Teddy Bridgewater as the backup and Luke Altmyer as the third-string QB.

Still, some fans believe Sorsby has enough upside to be under consideration. He may not be expected to challenge Goff, but the idea of developing under a veteran has become an NFL strategy.

For now, one thing is clear. Any discussion involving Goff's backup role will lead to strong opinions.

As the host of the podcast discussed Brendan Sorsby being linked to Detroit, the fans gave their own opinions. One fan compared Sorsby's gambling habit to wide receiver Jameson Williams' incident in 2023.

"You morons forget you have a gambler on your team already lmao," a fan commented.

Some fans stated that Sorsby to Detroit is not even worth talking about.

"Who was even considering it?" a fan wrote.

"lol I don’t even think this was a consideration??" another said.

However, a few of them thought it was a good idea to select Sorsby.

"A backup QB that can turn into our franchise," suggested a fan.

"Yeah, why even try getting him for a 5th? That’s so dumb. Why even try to make the team better?" a fan commented sarcastically.
