The Minnesota Vikings have concluded their minicamps, as the competition between quarterbacks Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy remains one of the biggest storylines ahead of the season.

Both Murray and McCarthy spoke to Twin Cities media members after the minicamp on Tuesday, where they continued to split reps with the first- and second-team offense as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Murray’s biggest challenge was not about learning a new playbook itself, but doing so while sharing practice opportunities.

“Source: #Vikings QB Kyler Murray on the toughest part of adjusting to Minnesota’s offense,” VikingsFanPage’s X post read on June 10. “Having to split reps, me already being behind me, not getting the amount of reps you would typically want a guy to get learning the offense, that's probably the toughest part.”

With the minicamps underway, Murray adjusts to Minnesota's system under head coach Kevin O'Connell after spending the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals.

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft is entering a new environment while competing for the starting role. Meanwhile, McCarthy made it clear that he is not focused on how the reps are divided.

“Those reps being distributed are something out of our control, and the only thing I focus on is that next rep and keeping it as simple as that,” McCarthy said.

The Vikings selected McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After missing his rookie season due to injury, the 23-year-old is entering a crucial year in his development and continues to compete for Minnesota's starting quarterback job.

Murray and McCarthy Taking Different Approaches

In his interview, Murray also acknowledged the difficulty of sharing reps, pointing out that this stage of the offseason is about learning and improving within O'Connell's offense.

“This is a different territory, obviously, having to learn a new offense on the fly,” Murray said. “At the same time, give myself grace. You're going to make mistakes. This is the learning phase.”

28-year-old Murray reflected on the reality of Minnesota's quarterback situation. With every practice rep carries extra importance when a veteran quarterback is adjusting to a new system.

The former Michigan quarterback McCarthy said he is concentrating on becoming the best version of himself each day, a mindset that has remained unchanged throughout the offseason.

In 2024, Murray threw for over 3,800 yards and 21 touchdowns for Arizona. On the other hand, Minnesota drafted McCarthy, but he spent the year recovering from a knee injury.

The Vikings have two more minicamp practices before the summer break, but the Vikings' quarterback battle is still far from settled.

But Murray's admission offered a clear look at the challenge he faces as he works to catch up in a new offense before they open the season against the Green Bay Packers on September 13.
