Sometimes the biggest lessons the NFL come from the toughest defeats. For veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, that moment arrived in a playoff against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.

During his recent appearance on the Green Light Podcast, Stafford shared his early postseason experience with the Detroit Lions. He discussed what happened during a playoff matchup in New Orleans and how the game shaped his future approach.

"Only two other trips and had a tough loss in Dallas and another one in Seattle," said Stafford on the Green Light Podcast. "But, that was all learning experiences...we started that game great, right? And I felt like at a certain point I probably had to keep up with Drew. I think I threw one or two second-half picks trying to get us back in that game"

The game Stafford was referring to was a 2011, 28-45, Wild Card loss where Stafford threw two interceptions, both in the final quarter, when New Orleans had already started that segment with a 10-point lead.

While speaking on the Green Light Podcast, Stafford offered insights into the challenges of facing one of the NFL's best passers in Brees. While Stafford did manage three TD passes, Brees did too, racking up 466 yards in that outing.

Stafford opened up about how this helped him in his development and in becoming a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Losses like this made his understanding of situations better and kept him disciplined.

While Stafford learned a valuable lesson, his return to Detroit for a playoff game was another experience.

Stafford's return to Detroit as an opposing quarterback was anything but welcoming. Sharing his experience on the Green Light Podcast, the Los Angeles star admitted the atmosphere at Ford Field was something he had never experienced before.

"But when I went back to Detroit, and they hosted their first playoff game there in however many years, that was electric..." said Stafford. "I mean, people were just booing the hell out of me and and uh screaming. But it was a fun place to play. So I thought that was the most physical football game I'd seen all year."

In the 2023 season NFC Wild Card matchup, Stafford faced the franchise where he spent his 12 seasons before being traded to the Rams.

Eventually, Los Angeles lost that game to its former team by a tight 24-23 margin. Still, Stafford gave it an honorable effort, with 367 yards and two passing touchdowns.
