Major Lions move has just made the training camp more interesting: Analyst

As per Mike Payton's July 28 piece, the Lions made three roster moves on Monday, July 27. The Detroit Lions made quite an interesting move in their defensive unit.

They have released defensive lineman Jay Tufele and placed safety Christian Izien and offensive guard Christian Mahogany on the active/non-football injury list (NFI).

Linebacker Troy Reeder was brought in from the Los Angeles Rams. To even things out, the Lions had to let go of Tufele. Tufele has played five seasons in the NFL, though he has only started seven out of his 46 games. He has 21 solo tackles and three tackles for loss to his name.

Putting everything into perspective, as per Payton's A to Z Sports report, that makes things dicey on the Lions' roster. According to Don Drysdale of Detroit Sports Nation, Mahogany was actually projected to start at left guard. He appeared in 11 games and started in all 11 during the 2025 season, his first full season.

However, that means he can be activated once he passes his physical and receives medical clearance. His absence will, however, lead to more early camp repetitions for Ben Bartch, Miles Frazier, Juice Scruggs and Giovanni Manu. If Mahogany cannot return by Week 1, one of these four will start against the New Orleans Saints on September 13.

This clearly implies that these players can probably get a serious look to become starters. Izien is also stuck in a similar situation. He had been getting significant first-team work during OTAs during Brian Branch's (Achilles injury) and Kerby Joseph's (knee injury) absence.

Without Izien, Detroit has become thinner at safety. Nevertheless, Lions head coach Dan Campbell isn't too worried about his team's defense.

Dan Campbell not distressed about Detroit Lions' injury concerns

Campbell addressed the media after the Lions started their training camp in Allen Park, which will go on until August 19. Following this, he spoke about the players who went missing in action because of injuries.

As posted by the Detroit Lions YouTube channel on July 29, here's what Campbell said.

"Izzy just had a little flu bug. We're going to make sure he's good to go, hopefully by Friday we get him in practice here," he said. "Mahogany needs a couple of days and then he'll be ready."

So there's not much panic in the Lions' training camp at the moment despite the long list of missing players.

Veteran tight end Tyler Conklin is also on the injured list. Campbell has stated that Conklin would be out for two weeks because of a calf injury. The head coach doesn't feel it's a setback and is looking at ways to incorporate him back into the squad.

In spite of the injuries, the Lions still have time on their hands to heal. The Lions play their opening game on September 13th against the New Orleans Saints.
