The Detroits have a new tight end, and he has a plan for them. Tyler Conklin is stepping up to protect quarterback Jared Goff, which could unlock the Lions' offense.

In his first media interaction, tight end Tyler Conklin made it clear his role goes beyond catching passes. The Lions' official YouTube channel posted the interview yesterday.

“I’ve always prided myself on trying to play every down… pass game, run game, pass protection. I just want to help this team however I can,” said Conklin.

Conklin is already thinking of helping the Lions' offensive line. A tight end who can stay on the field for multiple situations helps stabilize protection, especially in play-action and short-yardage sets. 

Conklin’s ability to block, release into routes, and adjust based on coverage gives Goff a reliable option while keeping the offensive structure intact.

Head coach Dan Campbell’s working philosophies also play into his strengths. “Nobody here just does one thing… they’re able to do everything,” Conklin said, pointing to the scheme that relies on multi-role tight ends. This approach allows the Lions to disguise plays without substituting personnel, creating matchup problems for defenses.

Tyler Conklin was first drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, has played for the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Chargers, and is now with the Detroit Lions. During his career, he has played 127 games, recording 270 receptions, 2,645 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns.

How Detroit's Offensive Line Moves Could Elevate Jared Goff's Game

With the addition of Tyler Conklin to Detroit’s offensive line, coach Dan Campbell can build a strong protection pocket for Jared Goff.  Conklin will serve as an extension of the offensive line, improving pass protection. 

Campbell has been a tight end coach in the past and does not shy away from taking on offensive coordination himself, as he did in the Lions' 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders in November last year.

So, he knows how crucial the combination of improved line depth and a versatile tight end room is for Detroit to control the tempo and maintain balance.

This offseason, the Lions are focused on rebuilding their offensive lineup. With the additions like center Cade Mays, the Lions are set to improve their interior stability and communication. 

They brought in Juice Scruggs to strengthen the interior rotation and kept continuity with returning guards like Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany.
