A recent PFF mock draft has the Detroit Lions making a surprising move. Instead of staying put, the team could trade down to select a 'green dot' leader for its defense from the SEC.

According to the Pro Football Focus (PFF) 2026 Mock NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions could make a calculated move, trading down from No. 17 to No. 23 in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

In return, Detroit lands Georgia linebacker CJ Allen, a “green dot” leader known for his command and character, while Philadelphia jumps up the board, potentially eyeing trench help like Olaivavega Ioane.

“The Lions trade down six spots and draft a player they could have reasonably selected had they stayed put,” wrote Daire Carragher. “Linebacker may not be the biggest need for Detroit, but this organization places a premium on high-character players who bring energy and enthusiasm.”

CJ Allen started his collegiate football career with the Georgia Bulldogs and became a key starter during his true freshman season in 2023.

He is best known for his elite football IQ, exceptional run defense, and leadership as a "green dot" defensive play-caller.

His PFF data says it all: in 2025, he earned a PFF grade of 81.8 while playing 474 snaps, with 65 tackles. Allen generated 12 total pressures, including 3.5 sacks.

Daire Carragher believes that the Lions are not in an urgent need of drafting a linebacker. But they might pursue him for his character and enthusiasm.

Allen wore the green dot on Kirby Smart’s defense. This has gained him a reputation as a good leader.  NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein raved about Allen’s tenacity and leadership abilities.

“‘Green dot’ linebacker and team captain more capable of rowing the boat than making big splashes,” wrote Zierlein.

Be it CJ Allen or others, the Lions have been linked with various defense players for the upcoming 2026 draft.

Lions Linked With Multiple Defensive Prospects Ahead Of 2026 NFL Draft

With the varied opportunities, the Detroit Lions aren’t locking in on just one defensive piece. 

Through free agency, they have already filled the voids in their roster. Now they are keen to build a champion squad through the drafts.

So far, they are following the GM Brad Holmes strategy by focusing on the upcoming Draft.

The board has been linked to multiple directions, and each prospect brings something different to the table. First is Reuben Bain Jr. out of the Miami Hurricanes. 

A PFF grade of 92.5 with 707 snaps tells you all you need to know about Bain Jr. Backed with production, he generated 67 pressures. The prospect could bring a rotational edge that can win one-on-one and close plays without needing space.

Then there’s T.J. Parker from Clemson. Bigger, with a taller frame at 6'4. He ran a 4.68 dash at the combine with a strong 10-yard split.

With 29 tackles for loss and 16 sacks over the last two seasons, he’s known for power and inside-out flexibility. 

That fits what Detroit looks for opposite Aidan Hutchinson, someone who can set the edge and slide inside when needed.
