The Detroit Lions' search for a new running back just hit a major snag. A top free agent target is officially off the market, forcing the team to pivot its offseason plans. This move leaves a significant hole to fill behind Jahmyr Gibbs.

As Tom Pelissero reported, "The Cardinals and two-time Pro Bowl RB James Conner have agreed to a revised contract to keep him in Arizona for 2026, sources say. Conner played just three games last season because an ankle injury. But he’ll be back at age 31.

Conner joined the Cardinals in 2021 as a running back. Continuing for five years with the Cardinals, he played 60 games covering 3763 yards with 38 touchdowns. He started his NFL career under the Pittsburgh Steelers’ banner in 2017. With the Steelers, he played in 50 games, covering 2272 yards and securing 22 touchdowns.

He progressed from the Steelers to the Cardinals with a one-year deal. For the following years, he received two extensions, 2022-2025, earning $21 million. For the time being, figures for the revised contract are not out, but according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, James has agreed to the pay cut.

“Interested to see how much of a pay-cut James Conner took. Good veteran leader and still holds value as a big back, but I’d be hesitant to pay more than $3-4M to a 31-year-old RB coming off a major injury,” said Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard. 

According to Josh Weinfuss, “Conner was set to earn $6.39 million in 2026 with a $9.83 million cap hit. To avoid being released for cap savings, Conner's deal was revised.”

Where the Lions Could Turn Next in Their RB2 Search

The Lions prioritize shorter, lower-value deals and typically avoid large, long-term contracts. Matching the Cardinals' offer is not an option for Detroit. The Lions must keep exploring the free market to land a replacement for David Montgomery.

Several free agents could fit that role, including Brian Robinson Jr., Emanuel Wilson, and J.K. Dobbins, all of whom could work in a two-back system alongside Gibbs.

Detroit could also take a low-risk approach with veterans looking to bounce back. Najee Harris and Joe Mixon, both coming off injuries in 2025, may be available on short one-year deals.

Detroit could also consider cheaper depth options such as Emari Demercado or Michael Carter, while still keeping the door open to drafting a young running back later this offseason.
